Dover municipal well #4 was closed in September 1980 after trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane were found in it, and the site was added to the EPA’s National Priorities List in 1983. The well has remained closed, so there is no current drinking water pathway; the New Jersey Department of Health concluded that exposure through the municipal supply would have occurred between roughly 1965 and 1980. The issue that still bears on individual homes is narrower. Near the associated Joy Cleaners source area, the Department of Health sampled nine residences between 2002 and 2004 and found tetrachloroethylene in indoor air, and the site was classified an indeterminate public health hazard with monitoring recommended.
