Whole house fan home inspections

Whole house fan: These are very high volume fans designed to move large amounts of air from within a structure to the outside. If the air is passed through the attic it also moves the stale, hot attic air to the outside and helps cool down the interior even more. Whole house fans are found mostly in humid parts of the country where just moving the air makes you feel cooler (evaporation is a cooling process and the moving air evaporates moisture off your skin). Keep loose clothing and small light articles clear of the intake area of these fans since they have considerable suction. Smaller fans are often found in hallway ceilings of single family residences. The may look similar to a large louvered vent. When the fan is turned on the air movement raises the louvers to allow air flow. It is recommended that the fan be serviced at least once per season. This may include cleaning the blades, oiling the bearings, and assuring that the louvers (if there are any) are easily raised.
