Water pipes exposed to freeze (plastic metallic): water pipes can burst if exposed to hard, hints from a home inspector

Water pipes exposed to freeze (plastic metallic): water pipes can burst if exposed to hard freezes. The inspector will note this item only if he is aware of the potential for freezing in your area. Any pipes which are exposed should be wrapped with insulation or heating wires. Leaving a small trickle of water running often can help in preventing freezing of the pipes. Contact a plumbing contractor in the area for a second opinion and for repairs. When hammering or banging noises occur every time a faucet is turned on or off, or every time an automatic valve in a sprinkler system or inside a washing machine or similar appliance snaps shut, it can be more than annoying. It may, indeed, signal the development of a condition which could eventually result in breaking open some soldered joints in copper pipe systems, and in loosening the mounting straps holding the pipes to the framing members. It could also endanger the condition of the water lines and could result in the bursting of some pipes or fittings. Water is not compressible, and when it is moving in a rapid stream and is suddenly halted by a swiftly closing valve, it tends to bang loudly against the walls of the pipe and fittings. If the pipe is also loose, it may move and bang against a framing member or other pipes resulting in an increase of noise. A whistling or squealing which occurs while the water is running or right after it is turned on, especially if the faucet is barely turned on, is usually caused by a loose washer, or one which is badly worn and no longer fits properly.
