water heater usage

Water heater usage can have quite an effect on your utility bills. While it may not seem like much each time your water heater turns on to heat the water in the water heater tank your gas bill goes up. All one must do is observe a gas meter when the appliances in the home are not running and them observe the gas meter when the water heater is on and one can see the meter spin like a top.

While water heaters are necessary to make the home habitable careful use of the hot water can help save dollars. When you are washing your hands in the bathroom I bet you turn on both the hot and cold water faucets. I further bet the water in your 70 +/- degree home comes out both faucests at starup within a few degrees of 70, that is until you start drawing fresh water from the street or until you start drawing fresh hot water from your water heater. I am also just about sure before the hot water gets to the faucet that you turn the faucet off because you are done washing your hands.

While there may be a benifit to washing your hands with hot water few of us can spare the 30 to 90 seconds it takes for hot water to get to the faucet during hand washing. Most people just later up and rinse their hands off using the house temperature water.

If you are not going to wait for the hot water to get hot you may as well lessen your hot water usage and not even bother to turn on the hot water.

Lowering ones hot water usage is a great way to save energy and to avoid premature water heater failure as the water heater will not have to turn on and off as much.
