Water heater systems can range from standard electric or gas hot water heating systems to domestic coils that sit inside steam or hot water boilers.

Domestic coils inside boilers are an old type water heater system that is very effective and uses the waste heat from a boiler to heat the hot water you use in your home. While using the waste heat from your boiler is a fine way to heat domestic hot water during the heating season it is not so great of an idea during the summer.

During the summer your huge boiler must fire up just about each and every time you call for hot water. Therefore every time you run a little hot water to wash your hands you drain some of the couple of gallons of water out of the domestic heating coil and the boiler fires up to make up for the hot water you used.

It is common for the water heater systems that are domestic heating coils to turn on a 100,000 BTU boiler many times a day. Use of a boiler for domestic hot water during the summer is not at all effeciant. Using a domestic coil in a boiler to preheat water that then enters an electric or gas water heater works just find. Then during the summer one can shut the boiler down and just use the electric or gas water heater rather than waste turning on the big boiler when it can be turned off for the warmer months.
