Water heater ratings
Water heater ratings One of the most talked about water heater ratings is the amount of gallons the water heater holds in reserve.
A 40 gallon gas water heater usually provides enough hot water for about four people. A 40 gallon electric eater heater usually provides enough hot water for about three people.
Notice I said people. Small children are people and they count too. Although a 200 pound adult uses more water for showers and drinking than a 20 pound child less loads of laundry are generated by most adults. If in doubt ask a family with children how many loads of laundry a day they run vs. the few loads a week most adult only houses do.
Electric water heaters take longer to make hot water than gas water heaters. Thus two water heaters one gas and one electric may be rated for the same amount of gallons the number of people they can supply hot water for is less.
A 50 gallon gas water heater usually provides enough hot water for about five people. A 40 gallon electric eater heater usually provides enough hot water for about four people.
Water heaters ratings also indicate how fast they recover or produce more hot water to make up for the water being drawn out of the tank. Buying too big of a water heater just wastes energy. Buying too small of a water heater means cold showers for the last one in. Striking a ballance between the two is the ideal.
