Since water heaters are usually only replaced when the water heater fails it is most logical to check with local water heater suppliers to get the best price and the fastest delivery. Water heater prices do vary and when I look for a water heater I am not concerned so much with the cost as I am with how quickly I could get it and when it can be installed.
Big box retailers may have the best water heater prices. However with the best water heater prices comes the chance you will be getting a factory second or a water heater that may have a better price but may be a lower quality.
While I too am in favor of saving money I personally have found it is very possible to get too good of an inital deal and instead of being happy with my purchase have found the water heater prices to be secondary to quality.

Water heaters are also priced by gallons. The larger the water heater the more it costs. You might think about getting two 40 gallon water heaters rather than one 75 gallon water heater. That way when the kids are not home you could turn one water heater off and save quite a bit since you will only be heating half the hot water.
