Standing pilot water heaters were once standard in all homes. Over time it was decided the pilot wasted gas and an effort was made to replace all standing pilot water heater with electronic pilots that do not use gas when the water heater is not in use.

While pilot type water heaters had their issues and did fail when thermo couples got old the newer style electronic ignition units seem to fail more often and be much more expensive to repair than replacing a thermo couple. The other major problem is thermo couples are cheap and easy to find. When the electronic ignition goes you must find the exact part you need. No easy thing to do at 3 AM on Saturday with a house full of company.

While I have an induced draft water heater with electronic igintion I have had problems with it more than once and each time it was a real problem getting replacement parts. I long for the day I had a water heater pilot that never seemed to go bad and was easy to replace if it ever did.
