Water heaters are usually found in the basement of homes. Water heaters located in the basement present a few issues. One is they are hard to get up and down the stairs. The other problem is when they break they can fill up the whole basement with water.
If your water heater is in the basement installation of a sump pump is a good idea. Sump pumps can pump out water as fast as the water heater spills it out onto the floor.
Water heaters located on the second floor or attic of a home can make a huge mess when they break. A water heater can dump out huge amounts of hot water when it breaks. Hot water pouring through a home can allow mold to grow very quickly and make a huge mess that will be very expensive to clean up.
In the end if a water heater is located inside the home no matter where it leaks it will make a mess. Installing a drip tray or overflow pan under the water heater are ways to help confine the mess and to avoid having the mess spread as the leaks are not avoidable.
