Use caution when lighting a water heater pilot. One near universal fact is you have to hold down that button till you loose feeling in the finger you are using. Holding down the button by passes the thermo couple and allows gas to flow when the thermo couple is not hot. When the thermo couple gets hot you can take your finger off the button and turn on the burners.
Make sure the area is clear of gas fumes before you light a match. The idea is to ignite the pilot not to blow your house up.
If you are not 100% sure how to light the pilot call someone who does before you hurt yourself and or others.
