Water heater burner access cover, hints from a home inspectorwater heater will not light - water heater wattage - This flame could melt plastic drain valves or cause fire in other ways. Also the water heater flame generates lots of heat. Without the flame shield being in position much of this heat is lost to the exterior where it wastes energy and causes damage to the water heater exterior and control valves. The flame shield, which is just behind the inspection door, would have been correctly reinstalled by the stains noted around the base of the water heater may or may not be ongoing even if the water heater is new.
