Wall floor heat electric gas heat home inspections
Wall floor heat electric
gas: Gas wall heaters are sometimes known as panel raye heaters and
are common. They should be considered "space heaters" since
they heat the space around them adequately but do not distribute it
well, although some have small blowers which distribute heat over a
larger area. Check the flame seasonally for a clean burning blue color.
Vacuum the face and pilot light/burner area seasonally. Be sure the
pilot light and burner are off before doing this. Placing a small
electric fan high in the room, or installing a ceiling fan, greatly
improves distribution in smaller buildings. Do not place furniture or
other flammables within 36 inches of the face of a wall heater. Contact
a heating contractor if you suspect any problems with the unit. If your
wall furnace has a name plate on the grill identifying it as a
"cadet" or "encore" brand you are advised to contact
the manufacturer in vancouver Washington at (800) 567-2613. A defect
within the unit is considered a fire hazard and is being recalled. The
units were installed between 1985 and 1992 in Oregon Washington,
California Idaho Montana and Wyoming Check out the consumer product
safety commission's web site for other recall information. Floor
furnaces, being in the floor and often immediately above the earth, are
susceptible to rust and dirt. Maintenance is heavy. Keep the top clear
of carpet and furniture. Vacuum any lint and dirt from the inside the
heater at least once before the season it is used. There have been
disastrous fires caused by debris in and around a floor furnace. Like
wall heaters, floor furnaces do not distribute heat well, but they can
be assisted with ceiling fans or other small fans placed high in the
room. Some of the older floor furnaces may be wrapped with asbestos
containing materials. The inspector will not always indicate whether
there are asbestos containing materials present. The presence of
asbestos can only be ascertained with laboratory testing. If you are
concerned with asbestos and desire this test you should contact an
asbestos abatement company or an asbestos removal company. Electric wall
heaters are quite common in areas which have no natural gas. Many types
are equipped with thermostats as a part of the off and on control knob.
Do not set furniture within 36 inches of the face of these units. Be
sure to not allow towels or the like to hang down over the face of these
heaters. When vacuuming, clean the face of the heater of any dust or
lint.
