TUB / SHOWER SURROUND MATERIAL DAMAGED / WORN / AMISS: Fiberglass and cultured marble tubs and showers may be damaged in several ways. The most common is when the "gel-coat," or finish, has been worn off exposing the structural material underneath. Other common damages are cracks and holes. Often someone will drop a heavy object to the floor of the tub or shower resulting in damage. Scratched fiberglass units often can be touched up with special paint kits. Fiberglass pans and tubs which are cracked or holed can be repaired with resin or auto body filler (both available at Auto Body Supply Dealers) but the repair may show as a bulge or small hump. After the repair, you may desire to have the tub or shower refinished. Sometimes the property owner will paint the tub with improper paints and make the situation worse.  Call a Tub Refinishing Company for additional information on this. A temporary remedy may be to apply silicone caulk to the damaged area. This should last from a few months to a couple of years. Acrylics are easy to repair depending on the extent of the damage. Contact a Corian® or other acrylics dealer for further information. This tub was refinished by the homeowner using wall paint. The problem is that it is a one-piece unit making it almost impossible to replace. Refinishing may be in order.

Granite and marble damages are varied. It may be necessary to acquire the services of a qualified tile setter equipped to handle slab materials. Metal surround defects are unique. Rust outs will be difficult or impossible to repair. The services of a professional painter may help.
