Thermostats can be bought for $10 or several hundred dollars. If you are the type person who keeps a home at the same temperature 24/7 a $10 thermostat that can not be programmed will work great.  If you leave the same time 7 days a week a seven day programmable thermostat can be obtained that can pay for it self very quickly.  If you like to stay home on the weeks and sleep late in comfortable temperatures there are 5/2 thermostats that have week day and week end settings.  

For those of you who have the time and desire there are very fancy thermostats that will do all sorts of fancy things. Systems exist that allow you to call your thermostat from your office, cell phone or even a computer on the other side of the world to reprogram or change the settings if you desire.

The more you pay the more fancy the thermostat.   Purchasing a thermostat with so many buttons you near learn to use is also a waste of money.  Keep you desire to save energy and desire to learn how to use a new electronic device balanced!
