sump pumps are devices which are activated by the rise of water inside a container lifting a float which is connected to a pump, hints from a home inspector
Sump pump floor entry way light well drain clogged: sump pumps are devices which are activated by the rise of water inside a container lifting a float which is connected to a pump motor switching device. The water is pumped to another location, such as into the street, or into the sewer system on the property. There are many problems which can befall a sump pump. The inspector is not allowed to flood test the pump so he must be indicating some visible problem. Clean the drain of debris and pour some water into it to ascertain its abilities. It is recommended that you have the seller of the property demonstrate the effectiveness of these drains, especially the sump pump, during your final walkthrough. Contact a plumbing contractor for further assistance, especially regarding the maintenance and repair of sump pumps. Floor drains are often found in commercial buildings and in residential basements and under laundry equipment. Entryway drains are found in front of doorways into basements if the lower landing is below grade. Light wells are similar but are placed outside below grade windows. If this drain were not operative, in heavy rains the entryway or light well could flood, as well as the basement. This item is only evident to the inspector if the drain is virtually covered with debris or in some way damaged, or possibly in such a location as to be virtually useless. The inspector cannot test a floor, light well or entryway drain.
