The inspector will enter this item when any evidence of fuel oil, natural or lpg gas leaks are noted. Refrigerant line leaks are noted if the inspector notes excessive leakage as indicated by the presence of an oily substance on the lines or fittings. Pipe lines should not be kinked or creased because a weak point may develop at the kink which in time may result in a leak. The damaged line may need to be replaced. New flex lines are available at building supply outlets, home improvement centers and plumbing supply dealers. Damaged flex gas or oil lines are easy to install. Be sure to test for gas leaks with soapy water if you install the flex line yourself. If you need assistance, contact a plumbing contractor. Damaged refrigerant lines usually require the assistance of an air conditioning contractor. The inspector will enter not supported when the soft copper refrigerant lines to, or from, a compressor unit are unsupported and are easily accessible to children or others who may step on the lines or otherwise damage them. If a coolant line is broken more damage may occur to the air conditioning unit than just lost refrigerant gas. Often this problem can be solved simply by installing a screen or fence around the unit. Most building supply outlets have redwood lattice panels which can be cut to fit your particular need. Supporting the pipes in some fashion is definitely in order. Usually this means placing a block or brick under the pipes or strapping the pipes to the wall of the building or to a post. You may require the assistance of a handy man in this particular case.
