Plastic water pipes, hints from a home inspector
Plastic water pipes have become very popular in the past several years. Many new homes have flexible plastic pipe installed which originate at a multi-outlet manifold. The manifold and pipe installation must follow rigid guidelines since plastic pipe is easily damaged. In the attic and
sub areas the pipe should be insulated. Metal plates should be installed at wood framing members where the pipe passes close to the surface to prevent fasteners from penetrating the pipe. Kinks in the pipe is not acceptable. Other rules apply regarding plastic pipe installation. Be aware that the inspector cannot ascertain whether regulations have been followed since most of the pipe is not visible. If these limitations concern you it is recommended that a qualified plumbing contractor be contacted to review the piping and provide a second opinion.
PVC pipe is a rigid plastic pipe largely used for cold water applications. Plastic pipe is plumbing pipe, tubing and fittings made from various types of plastic and assembled with clamps, or compatible adhesives. The main types of plastic pipes used in construction follow. Abs pipe is a pipe made of acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene, a form of plastic commonly used in the manufacture of drain, waste, and vent pipes. Common pipe diameters in this material are 1
12, 2, 3, and 4 inches. CPVC is a pipe made of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, a type of plastic used in making plumbing pipe suitable for use with hot water or hot gasses.
