PB pipe is a gray sometimes silver or black colored pipe made of polybutylene, hints from a home inspector

PB pipe is a gray sometimes silver or black colored pipe made of polybutylene, a material used in the manufacture of flexible plastic tubing for hot and cold water. Polybutylene pipe has been known to fail. Class action lawsuits have been filed naming polybutylene pipe as a defective product. You must use discretion here. Since very little, if any, of the pipes are visible to the inspector, and since PB pipe deteriorates from the inside and then splits under pressure, determining whether the pipes are affected is impossible, and is beyond the scope of the visual inspection. If this concerns you, you are advised to have a qualified plumbing contractor review the piping in and around the structure before taking purchasing the property. Review www.pbpipe.com on the internet for additional information or call the consumer plumbing recovery center at 1 800-876-4698.
