PLYWOOD / OSB ROOF SHEATHING:
OSB PLYWOOD SHEATHING ROOF SHEATHING:
Sheathing is the material fastened to
rafters to support the actual roofing material.
4 x 8 foot sheets of plywood are used under
almost all roofing materials in new construction
except wood shingles, which is usually sheathed
under with 1 x 6 inch boards laid perpendicular
to the rafters and spaced a few inches apart.
Both plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are
extremely strong and rigid when installed
properly and are both common framing methods.
sagging excessively. 1" x 6" T&G
stock may be used in roof sheathing where the
framing has rafters spaced 16 to 24 inches
apart. Often this type sheathing is used only at
the eaves where it is visible. The tongue and
groove configuration is instrumental in helping
the sheathing maintain rigidity, in that, the
"tongue" (which runs the full length
of the board) of one board is inserted into the
groove of adjoining boards which runs their full
lengths.
