All newer water heaters have special technology built in to help avoid explosions.  many deaths, explosions and fires are caused each year when volatile fumes such as gasoline and paint thinner get ignited by water heaters.

The new technology water heaters are designed to avoid that specific set of events.  

Safer water heaters are likely to be then end result and of course they will cost more and are likely to be more prone to turning off for no reason until the technology strikes a balance between safety and convenience.
