Municipal sewer public sewer system, hints from a home inspector
Municipal or public sewer system (verify with seller and agent): municipal sewer means the building is connected to a municipal sewer system. This does not mean a septic tank system is not present on the property. Many older septic tank systems are left in place after a municipal system is piped in. Check with the municipal building department in an attempt to determine whether a septic tank system was used and what remedial action to take. Be aware that the inspector indicates the property is connected to a municipal sewer system only when the seller or real estate agent provides that information. It would be impossible to know whether or not a septic tank is actually connected, with any degree of certainty, without excavating the pipelines and tracing their layout. The property may, in fact, be connected to a septic system. Check with both the real estate agent and the seller for additional information and do not hesitate to contact the inspector if desired.
