Masonry chimneys: masonry
chimneys are probably more prevalent than other types of chimneys. While
little maintenance is required of them one must monitor their integrity
regularly if exposed to earthquakes, freezing rains and snow, and/or
heavy use. Some method to keep rain out of the chimney should be
installed. Spark arrestors are recommended and may be required. A
chimney (except direct vent) should terminate at least 24 inches above
any part of the building that is within 10 feet and terminate at least
36 inches above the roof it passes through.
