MASONITE FORMICA PLASTIC LAMINATE SURROUND MASONITE

MASONITE OR FORMICA OR PLASTIC SURROUND: MASONITE
is a brand of pressed wood which is usually decorative and quite common as a tub or shower surround material. This material is not water proof but is water resistant as long as the decorative coating on its face is in good condition. The most common problem with this material is warping, due to insufficient adhesion to the wall, and damage at the edges. Keep Masonite surrounds well caulked around their edges to slow down their deterioration. Plastic laminate is a sheet material comprised of a decorative paper bonded to several layers of resin-treated kraft paper then covered with a translucent, melamine-resin which becomes clear during pressing and curing. The resulting material is hard, durable, and resistant to water, alcohol, heat, and stains. Plastic laminates (the brand name Formica ® , is probably the best known) are often bonded to particle board or plywood for use in furniture, countertops, wall coverings, and much more. This material can be burned and can be scratched but is resistant to stains. When used as a tub or shower surround it should be kept well caulked as is indicated for Masonite above.
