Heat pump with electric
heat backup A heat pump is really just a modified air conditioning
unit. Special modifications allow the heat which is normally thrown
outside the building to be blown into the building. Heat pumps work well
in areas with moderate heating needs. They are not very efficient in
long periods of cold weather where the temperatures are less than 30
degrees f unless they are equipped with electric backup coils. Heat
pumps need lots of air movement to be effective so the need for larger
ducting is apparent. Some ducting may be wrapped with, or composed
entirely of, asbestos containing materials. The inspector will not
always indicate whether there are asbestos containing materials present.
The presence of asbestos can only be ascertained with laboratory
testing. If you are concerned with asbestos and desire this test you
should contact an asbestos abatement company or an asbestos removal
company.
Leave all registers open and be sure to allow for air flow under
interior room doors if new carpeting is installed. Keep filters changed
or cleaned and have the unit maintained and serviced at least once a
year. Inspection limitation: the heat pump will not be operated in the
heat mode if outside air temperatures are above 75 degrees Fahrenheit To
do so may damage the unit. Operating the pump in the cooling mode
usually suffices since their operation is almost identical. Contact an
air conditioning contractor for further information if desired.
