Heater toxic gas test

Heater toxic gas test: A heater toxic gas test is ordinarily performed during the technical inspection only. The heater toxic gas test is not part of the visual inspection service but the inspector may elect to perform a preliminary toxic gas test as an added courtesy. Forced air units are tested by allowing output air from a register to pass over the test equipment sensor. Wall heaters and floor furnaces are tested by passing the sensor around through the rising heated air. The purpose of the test is to detect toxic gasses regardless of the source. Obviously it is important that the heater not exhaust toxic gasses into the building. Toxic gas emissions may indicate a cracked or holed heat exchanger but the source may be originating from some other defect in the heater. If the flame is burning perfect or if the operation of the air handler or blower creates a positive air pressure around a forced air unit's heat exchanger there may be no indication or "reading" on the test equipment, yet there may still be a crack or hole in the heat exchanger. If the heater Operates with natural gas the local gas company should be called upon to review the heater. This service is usually at no charge. If the heater operates on lpg, coal or oil it is recommended you contact a heating contractor to ascertain the source of any toxic gasses.
