Gravity heating system

Gravity heating system:Gravity furnaces make use of the specific gravity difference of warm and cold air. Gravity heating systems lack fans or motors to move air and were common prior to homes having installed electrical systems.

Warm air being lighter, rises, and cold air being heavier, falls. The system has no motor and no filter. The ducts must slope upwards from the furnace to the registers so the warm air can rise. Gravity furnaces are usually installed in basements, if they are placed on an upper floor they would not work.

Although there may be small thermostat wires running to it, the gravity furnace has no other electrical input. Since it is without a motor the gravity furnace is very quiet. It is somewhat slower heating a building than a forced air system and may not effectively heat rooms which are on the ends of the duct runs.

In milder climate zones, the gravity system may be a sufficient system, but in very cold climates, it may not heat the building up to today's standards.
