Gas log log lighter valve If the
fireplace has a gas log installed, which burns natural gas, be sure the
damper is permanently opened. There are retrofit devices sold which can
be installed on the damper to keep it in an open, or at least partially
opened, position. A closed damper may be dangerous in the vent gas
escaped from the gas log. Instead of drifting up the chimney, the gas
would escape into the house. Keep valve keys out of log lighter gas
valves to prevent children from accidentally turning on the gas. Lpg
(propane, butane) is generally not allowed in fireplaces. Some
jurisdictions allow lpg however, if automatic igniters are installed. It
is recommended that you contact your local building department for
further information.
