Foundation Slab, Slab, Foundation design

Foundation slabs do not have basements below them. Footings are typically excavated around the perimter of the dwelling. In Northern climates footings are usually about three to four feet deep about 12 inches wide and around eight inches thick. Footings are usually wide in order to spread the load or weight of the foundation walls and dwelling out onto the soil below in order to avoid movement of the structure. Footings are installed below the frost line so frost does not damage the structure. Soil is leveled about 8 inches below the desired top of slab level. Then 4 inches of crushed stone is levled over the soil. Last a 4 inch thick cement floor slab is installed either meeting or on top of the foundation walls.

If the soil under the floor slab is not compacted and debris free the floor slab will setlle or drop and it will be very difficult and very expensive to cure.

If you own a slab home it is vital you keep water away from the foundation. If water seeps through the foundation it will wet the soil, consolidate the soil and allow the floor slab to drop.

Please always rememeber the only thing holding up the floor slab is the soil. Once the soil drops so will your floor slab!
