Fire stop not installed at attic penetration

Fire stop not installed at attic penetration. Chases (sometimes called chimney chases) that are capped at the top with sheet metal. The sheet metal cap should be "quilted" or bent in such fashion as to cause the cap to slope to the outer edges. Chimney chase caps which are sloped inward will hold water against the chimney vent and leaks into the wood or metal framed chase will likely occur. Stains noted on the ceiling above the fireplace often are caused by this. The metal chimney passes through a collar built into the chase cap. The collar must be sealed properly to the sheet metal cap or leaks will occur at that point. Generally, the collar is soldered to the cap but Silicone caulk may suffice. If the top of the chimney is accessible, the inspector will note problems in this area. While spark arrestors may not be required in your particular area or construction era, it is always a good idea to have spark arrestor type caps installed on any chimney. Spark arrestor caps help prevent sparks flying out of the chimney, which in turn could ignite roofs, grass, or trees. Chimney caps, whether the spark arrestor type or not, also help
