Firebrick mortar loose cracked damaged
Firebrick mortar loose cracked damaged gapped: The inspector will enter this item if any cracks are noted inside the fireplace in the fire brick and mortar or if loose or gapped bricks are noted. The item is also entered if the inspector notes the heat resistant panels within the fire box are cracked, loose or are warped. Cracked fire boxes can often be repaired easily, if the crack is not structural. Heat resistant caulk, which is available at almost all fireplace dealers and some building supply outlets can be applied with your fingertip, or spread directly from the caulking tube, over the crack effecting adequate temporary repairs. If the chimney or fire box is cracked severely or if the bricks are excessively loose it may be necessary to contact a masonry contractor or fireplace service for assistance. Contact NJ home inspectors for more information and assistance.
