Evaporative cooler rusted, evaporative cooler damaged, evaporative cooler problems, evaporative cooler repair needs cleaning The inspector will enter this item if it is noted that the cooler is heavily rusted, leaking at rust-outs, is in need of coatings, etc. Evaporative coolers that are not properly cared for and maintained will not last many years. If the unit is in very poor condition it may need to be replaced. The inspector also will enter this item if it is noted that the blower motor is loose, inoperative, heavily rusted, has a worn or loose fan belt, blower bearings needing oil or replacement, etc. The pump should be providing
Enough water to the pads to wet them evenly. The water float valve should be properly adjusted so water does not run out the overflow onto the ground or roof. The small recirculating pumps used in most evaporative coolers usually last 3 to 5 years and are inexpensive. Problems surface at the beginning of the season because rust and mineral deposits which form during the off season prevent the pump impeller blade from moving. Most all pumps sit enclosed by a small screen that filters out debris that may clog the pump or lines. This screen must be kept clean and properly positioned. The water line running from the pump often gets kinked or clogged and during the use season, should occasionally be reviewed and cleaned. Pumps are available at lumber yard and home improvement stores and are easy to install. Each month during the cooling season the pump should be reviewed. Should the cooler seem to be putting out unusually hot air you should take action at that time. The most common problem is pump and distribution lines clogged with straw from the cooler pads. Blower motors are long lasting but can give problems if the pulley sizes are not proper for the motor size and if the shaft bearings are not properly lubricated. Replacing a blower motor is easy for the individual with some expertise with tools and hardware and with electricity.
Wiring the new motor is critical if it is a two-speed motor. Improperly Wired, the motor will almost surely burn out rapidly. The pads are what makes a cooler cool the air. Evaporation is a cooling process. As air is pulled through the pads of a water cooler it causes the water in the pads to evaporate thereby cooling the air in the process. This evaporation is enhanced by dry air (which is why they are used mostly in the southwestern united states) and explains why they are
