Duct insulation or vapor barrier wrap missing On an average, it is expected that at least 10% of the heating or cooling energy will be lost out of the duct system and end up in the attic, basement or crawl space, or within walls or floor systems. Duct work carrying conditioned air, heated or cooled, should be insulated if it passes through uninsulated spaces, such as under the building or in the attic. Some flex ducting with a vinyl-like vapor-barrier wrap will deteriorate quickly if exposed to sunlight (through vents or simulated dormer windows) and will fall away from the ducting exposing the fiberglass insulation. This can lead to sweating around the ducting. Usually the ducting will have to be replaced if the damage is advanced. Insulate most duct work with 1 1/2 inch foil faced insulation, wrapping it around the duct as best you can.
