altered: The inspector will enter this item if any modifications to the heating or air-conditioning system are noted. This may include something as simple as a retrofitted thermostat valve for a normally manually operated wall or floor furnace. Technical alterations may not be noted by the inspector since appliances are not disassembled. This item is considered a possible problem due to the fact that alterations may lead to improper adjustment of the appliance and subsequent harmful substances being released into the building. Home warranty companies often will not cover system which have been altered improperly. It is recommended that you obtain a second opinion from a heating contractor or from the gas supplier in your area (if applicable).
