Ducting damaged separated leaking
Ducting damaged separated leaking Ducting, though installed correctly, over a period of time, with the expansion and contraction of air pressure moving through them, may break apart at seams or come loose from support points. Sometimes small animals will chew on duct work or duct wrappings making a mess of things in basements, crawl spaces and attics. Some flex ducting with a vinyl-like vapor barrier wrap will deteriorate quickly if exposed to sunlight (through vents or simulated dormer windows) and will fall away from the ducting, exposing the fiberglass insulation. This can lead to sweating around the ducting. Usually the ducting will have to be replaced if the damage is advanced.
Sometimes ducting will pull loose or fall from attachment straps and hangers and will be touching earth under buildings. This condition quickly deteriorates the duct and should be prevented. Unsupported ducting should be securely strapped to the framing with straps that are at least 1 1/2" wide, preferably sheet metal straps. Most of these conditions can be repaired by the property owner. Rolls of special duct tape and wire hangers are available at any building supply outlet. When moving about in attics watch where you step as you may step through a ceiling and fall to the floor below. Do not step on pipes, ducts, or electric wires. If assistance is needed contact a handyman service or home repair service.
