copper gas pipe copper, hints from a home inspector
Copper gas lines are not commonly used in most areas of the country. If the copper pipe is the proper type for use with natural gas
and/or propane and is properly installed, one should expect the system to be trouble free. Be sure copper pipe is secured so that unnecessary pressures will not be exerted against it causing possible failure of the joints. Be aware that copper is softer than most other metal pipes and will be damaged by screws and nails driven into it. Use caution when hanging pictures, cabinets, etc. You are advised to contact the gas supplier to the property to determine if copper pipes are allowed as gas lines. Should you desire a gas leak test it is recommended that you contact the gas supplier to the property. This is usually a free service. Steel pipe is used mostly for the transport of gasses such as natural gas. This pipe is commonly buried in the ground
and/or run against, across, or through framing members within the structure to supply gas to the appliances. Be sure that this pipe is secured so that unnecessary pressures will not be exerted against it causing possible failure of the joints. If the pipe is buried it should have a wrapping applied to its exterior which will reduce corrosion. . The gas company may be able to perform tests not allowed by inspection companies. This may include shutting the gas off to the appliances so a meter reading can be performed. If the meter indicates loss of gas while everything is shut down there may be a gas leak. Inspection companies cannot shut down appliances and valves for the buyer but the gas company may do so since they are testing for the seller.
