Copper pipe in natural or LPG gas line, hints from a home inspector
Copper pipe in natural or LPG gas line (ok at LPG tank): natural gas has some sulfur content. Sulfur causes a copper sulfide reaction that flakes the inside of the copper pipe. This can cause problems with the pilot light at a minimum and could cause the thermocouple activated safety shut-off device to not shut off the gas should the pilot light blow out. This simple condition then becomes potentially hazardous, for at this point gas is being released to the room containing the appliance. Replace any copper tubing or pipes in gas lines immediately. This can generally be accomplished by property owners with some plumbing experience. All needed supplies will be available at building supply dealers. Copper in
LPG gas lines is allowed in some areas, but generally only at the tank connector. If, at some latter date, the area is supplied with natural gas you would have to remove any copper gas lines. Contact the
LPG gas supplier for additional information. Contact a plumbing contractor for further assistance. Be aware that copper pipes are allowed in some areas of the country in natural gas lines. Check with your local gas supplier for further information if the inspector has entered this item.
