Compressor condenser noise The inspector has reviewed many air conditioning systems. After inspecting numerous heating and air-conditioning units most inspectors develop an experienced ear for what the equipment should sound like. Unusual noises very often are indications of impending problems. Sometimes the noise will be caused by ordinary sheet metal vibrations, especially those associated with the condenser fan. If this is the case, and should you desire, you may be able to make repairs yourself. When removing sheet metal and inspection plates from these units be extremely careful. Almost all ac units require 240 volts to operate and these high voltages are extremely dangerous. Make sure the power to the unit is turned off at the electric service panel, not at the thermostat before attempting any repairs. Contact an air conditioning contractor for service and assistance if necessary, especially if the noise is within the compressor or is especially loud.
