Combustibles mantle too close to fire box or opening
Combustibles mantle too close to fire box or
opening: Most mantles should be at least 24 inches above the top of the fireplace opening if the mantle is made of combustible materials. Keep things off the mantle that may burn. Closely observe the underside of the mantle at times and make sure it shows no signs of excess heat. Combustibles that are too close to the fire box or opening may include wood trims that are affixed to the face or building framework set too close to a manufactured fireplace assembly. In most cases the inspector would not see the latter situation but may in new construction inspections before the framing is covered. It is recommended that you contact a chimney sweep or a fireplace specialist for an additional opinion and modifications if necessary.
