How Heating Systems Work

Carbon Monoxide in the Home

Carbon monoxide is the so called silent killer.  It kills thousands of Americans every year, frequently while they sleep. Contrary to popular wisdom defective heat exchangers alone are seldom the only problem.  Usually blocked chimneys, dirty equipment or return grills near defective equipment are the cause or contributing factor.

Installation of at least one working carbon monoxide detector outside or each sleeping area is recommended to provide you with an early warning a hazard exists. Without a carbon monoxide detector to wake you up you can sleep through an unsafe condition and never wake up.

Have your heating equipment serviced every few years if it is gas powered and every year if it is oil powered.  Make sure you watch your service person test the flue gas CO levels and demand action be taking if the levels are above 100 or so PPM.  High CO readings up the stack are a possible indication of incomplete combustion or defective equipment.

Make safety your number one priority.
