Asbestos removal vs. Asbestos exposure is an on going debate. Is there more asbestos in a home before it the asbestos is removed and how much asbestos is problematic.
It is very likely the average persons exposure to asbestos in a home is minimal at best. Is minimal asbestos exposure so hazardous that asbestos removal is a viable option? That is a question I can not answer for you at this point in time. As more data is accumulated it will be easier to make a choice.
Asbestos removal is a complex and expensive process. It is necessary to have the basement sealed off from the home during asbestos removal and for the area to be made pressure negative. If the area where the removal is taking place is NOT pressure negative asbestos fibers can float through the home and spread contaminiation.
After the area where asbestos removal is going to take place is sealed off from the home and made pressure negative asbestos surfaces are typically wet with a water and soap solution in order to stop asbestos fibers from floating around.
Amateurs who remove asbestos typically skip all three of the above steps and thus cause more problems than they solve. Not making the removal area pressure negative, not sealing it off and not wetting the asbstos fibers with the soap solution are all ways to make sure the fibers float through the building and contaminate all surfaces within the home.
Asbestos removal is NOT a job for those who have not been trained. Many times I find homes where the asbestos was not professionally removed and buyers find the cost for a clean up for contaminate surfaces is several times the cost of professional asbestos mitigation.
Cost for asbestos removal range start at $800 and go up from there. Sometimes they go far up if fibers have floated through the home and got stuck in carpet or furniture. It is far cheaper and far better if professionals are hired to remove the asbestos rather than take chances with your health and the health of your family.
