AC amp draw, Air conditioning amp draw, air conditioning testing, AC test
A-C amp draw volt drop test: This
test is performed only during the technical inspection service. The amp
draw/voltage drop test is not part of the visual inspection service. Air
conditioners operating on electricity are generally tested with an amp
meter to assure that the unit is not drawing more current than it is
supposed to (as per the rating plate on the side of the unit). Voltage
measured at the terminals close to the unit should not be less than the
line voltage (measured when the unit is off) by more than 10 percent. An
excessive voltage drop may indicate burned relay contact points, loose
electrical connections, wire that is too small for the unit, etc. Any
variations from the norm should be reviewed by an air conditioning
contractor.
