ABS plastic drain pipes are quite common, hints from a home inspector home inspectors

ABS PVC plastic drain pipes: ABS plastic drain pipes are quite common in today's construction. It is durable if it is kept out of sunlight and is supported properly. Plastic pipe which is exposed to sunlight should be painted heavily to cut down on ultraviolet damage.

Supports for plastic pipes should be placed as often as necessary to prevent the pipe from sagging. Abs pipe used in fixture drains (under the sink) are often found to be view of older hub type cast iron drain line. Leaking at the compression nuts. Tightening down the nut will usually stop the leak if you do not over tighten and break the nut.

The inspector will run considerable amounts of water through each fixture in an effort to determine whether the drains are capable, in a reasonable amount of time, of handling the amount of water entering the fixture, and to assure that the fixture drain does not overflow when another fixture is drained simultaneously. The inspector cannot ascertain whether the drain lines will perform properly in the future. Drainage may be blocked at any time by roots, broken pipes and other damages caused by repairmen, objects flushed into the system by homeowners, etc.

Note: some abs drain pipe manufactured and or installed during the years 1985 through 1988 has been found to have been manufactured with defective materials. Products manufactured under the names centaur, phoenix, polar is, gable, and apache are reported to have failed, as have others not listed here. If this information concerns you, it is of utmost importance that you contact the inspector, before close of escrow, for additional information. You are further advised to seek the opinion of a plumbing contractor. Some newer construction may include PVC drain lines. These pipes must be protected by metal straps to prevent driving nails and screws into them. Manufactures expect the newer plastic pipes to outlast metal.
