INSULATION INSUFFICIENT / MISSING / COMPRESSED / AMISS:
If insulation is thin, compressed, nonexistence, or is misplaced there could be loss of energy and larger utility bills. Of course, the inspector cannot determine the existence of insulation within covered walls or other hidden areas. Compressed insulation may indicate the presence of rodents or other animals.  Blown insulation in an attic is recommended and is quite inexpensive. Installing insulation within existing walls is much more difficult but is recommended in certain areas of the country. It is usually blown in through holes drilled in the siding between each framing stud. Often insulation will be falling from under floors and/or from the attic walls of volume ceiling rooms. If you desire to blow in your own insulation it is quite easy, especially if you have a helper. Many insulation supply companies will loan you the blower if you buy their products. A helper keeps the blower hopper full while you blow the insulation into the attic. You may also elect to lay fiberglass insulation in place in the attic. Watch your step or you may fall through the ceiling to the room below. Loose batt insulation may be stapled or wired in place. Some installers of under floor insulation use pieces of stiff wire, like coat hanger wire, which is cut slightly longer than the distance between the floor joists. These holding wires are pressed between the joists to hold the insulation in place. Usually one wire is installed about every two feet. Contact an Insulation Contractor for assistance if desired.
