APPLIANCE VENT TOO CLOSE TO
COMBUSTIBLES / SEPARATED / AMISS:
Unsafe appliance vents can be extreme fire
hazards. Often we see appliance vents which have
separated allowing exhaust gases to superheat
nearby framing members, etc. All appliance vents
should be tight at their joints and in sound
condition. No combustible materials should be
within 2 inches of any appliance vent, and
1" is an absolute minimum distance. All
appliance vents within an attic must be
"double wall" if made of sheet metal.
Appliance vents which touch rafters or other
framing members should be moved to prevent
possible combustion of the wood frame. Sometimes
it will be necessary to cut some of the
offending material away-but not to the point
that it weakens the member. Contact a Sheet
Metal Contractor for additional assistance if
needed.
