NO FIRESTOP IN APPLIANCE VENT
/ CHIMNEY CHASE:
An appliance vent chase or chimney chase is the
framed area between floors or within a wall
which surrounds the heater exhaust vent or any
other fuel burning appliance vent or zero
clearance fireplace chimney. See Figure 272. If
the vent separated, or failed in some other way,
or if the top or sides of the fireplace firebox
failed in some way, the fire-stop should contain
the fire before it spreads to the attic or
between floors. Most building codes and
standards require firestops in openings around
pipes, vents, chimneys, ducts, fireplaces, and
similar openings which could provide a
passageway for fire at ceiling and floor levels
and should be constructed of noncombustible
materials. It is relatively easy to install
firestops if you can gain access. Materials may
be 1 1/2 inch thick lumber or 2 thicknesses of
3/4 inch lumber, with staggered lap joints, or
may be 3/4 inch plywood or 5/8 inch type
"X" drywall fastened securely in
place. You may also use 26 gauge sheet metal
fastened securely in place. Contact a General
Building Contractor for assistance as needed.
