EARTH TO WOOD DISTANCE
QUESTIONABLE OR INSUFFICIENT:
Dirt is built up too close to the wood portion
of the building or deck. When untreated wood and
earth are very close there is increased risk of
wood damage from moisture and/or wood boring
insects. Try to maintain at least 2 inches
between earth and wood. The optimum distance
between earth and untreated wood is 8 inches
with the absolute minimum being 2 inches. Remove
the excess soil around the building, but in such
a fashion as to not cause water to stand against
the foundation. Water should always drain away
from the structure for at least three feet and
have a swale (or small ditch) carry it to a yard
drain or to the street. A Landscape Service or a
Landscape Contractor can be helpful in
undertaking this task, as can a competent
Handyman Service. Under the building excess soil
may simply be scraped aside. This can be done by
a Handyman Service.
