SUMP PUMP INOPERATIVE /
AMISS:
Sump pumps usually operate by a float activated
switching system. When water enters the sump
area the float rises to the point that activates
the switch. As the water is pumped down the
float lowers, switching the pump off. Usual
problems are that the pump switching device
fails or the float sticks from lack of use.
Sometimes the outflow-pipe check-valve fails
allowing water to run back into the sump after
the pump shuts off. If this causes the pump to
recycle it may lead to premature pump failure.
Pumps installed outside, however, can develop
problems as a result of the water, held in the
line by the check valve, freezing up. The parts
of the pump system resting in water will often
rust and freeze up causing failure. It may be
necessary to replace the pump system with a new
one. If so be sure to get one with all bronze
bearings and moving parts for longer lasting
more trouble free service. Contact a Pump Repair
Service for assistance with this problem.
