inspectors perform
Certified New Jersey home
inspections in NJ.
POLE / COLUMN:
Pole foundations are found mostly on hillsides
or on beach-front properties. Flood plain
locations may also have pole foundations. The
poles may be metal, wood or concrete. The poles
should have sufficient diagonal bracing between
them to prevent excessive swaying in heavy winds
or earth tremors. If the building were to sway
or "rack" excessively the interior
walls may crack or wrinkle. The diagonal braces
are usually heavy metal bars which have bolts at
one or both ends. Checking these bolts on a
yearly basis is recommended. If the bolts need
tightening be sure to tighten the bolts evenly
or you may "rack" the structure. Metal
poles and braces are usually set on concrete
foundations and footings. If the poles should
rack excessively the weld joints could crack.
This inspection cannot ascertain whether cracks
exist at the weld joints of any metal pole
construction. Annually check for damages to this
type foundation and closely monitor any adverse
conditions.
