GUARD OR HANDRAILS LOOSE /
MISSING / DAMAGED / AMISS:
Decks which are more than 30 inches high
(18" in some areas) should have guardrails.
A stairway with four or more steps should have a
handrail. Steps without handrails which run down
to the street from the front entry are common
"offenders." Steps without handrails
which lead up and around a building are also
common, as are steps which lead up slopes to the
top of retaining walls and the like. Often
property owners will just want to be aware of
this situation and use the deck or steps with
caution. Sometimes property owners-especially
those with elderly company--will want to install
some sort of handrail. The installation of
handrails and guardrails on concrete walks or
decks is best accomplished by Wrought Iron
Companies. Usually they will drill into the
concrete and install either expansion bolts or
the rails themselves and pour special cement
around them. Wood decks or walks are even easier
to make safe and may be accomplished by Building
Contractors as well as Wrought Iron Contractors.
If you elect to do it yourself you will find
hand and guardrails are fairly easy to install
provided you have the right tools. Be sure to
keep guardrails at least 36 inches above the
surface you stand on (42 inches on commercial
buildings) and handrails at least 34 inches
above each stair or step nose.
