1950 TO 1962:
Structures of this period may not have grounded
outlets or even sufficient outlets in a room by
today's standards. Expect to use extension cords
to run some of your appliances. Be sure to buy
the heaviest cord possible for the application.
Use of asbestos containing materials was
widespread, especially in heater ducting and in
vent stacks (transite pipes). The inspector
cannot be sure whether asbestos materials are
present since it requires special testing to
ascertain the presence of asbestos. Lead paint
may be present in this era of construction. The
Visual Inspection Service does not report on the
presence of lead, in any form. Many main drain
lines were made of bituminized fiber material
such as "ORANGEBURG" in the early to
mid 50's and even later. This material has been
known to cause problems within 20 to 30 years of
its installation. This inspection cannot
ascertain whether bituminized fiber pipes are
present. This is a visual inspection and fiber
pipes are usually underground. Galvanized water
pipes installed in this era may be in advanced
stages of mineral buildup causing reduced water
flow at faucets, especially if several are
turned on at once. Prepare to replace the main
line to the street if it has not already been
done. The inspector will not be able to find all
code violations and other deficiencies in and
around a property, especially in construction
eras of the past. This inspection is not
intended to expose code violations. The
inspector will, however, try to reveal the most
obvious problems and builder oversights. Contact
the inspector for additional information
regarding this inspection limitation if
necessary.
